BRETFORTON avenged last season’s league defeat in this, their final pre-season friendly against Gloucester City.

This season’s captain Tess Lewinton set out how she wanted her team to play and they complied. Simple, passing hockey was the order of the day and the Pink Ladies carried out their instructions to perfection.

The deadlock was broken midway through the first half when Lewinton drew the City keeper off her line and placed the perfect pass across the face of the D to find Sarah Hall bravely sliding in to score at the far post.

The midfield union certainly clicked into gear as Lisa Workman and Hayley Whitehouse worked exceptionally hard to keep possession and they were helped out on more than one occasion by the brilliant Daisy Wheeler.

Bret’s defence were tested with a flurry of penalty corners at the end of the first half but stout concentration kept the visitors ahead going into the break.

Bret doubled their lead in the second half with the ultimate team goal when Heather Carr’s ball out of defence found Amy Pinkney on her return to the first XI and she then slipped the ball to Whitehouse, whose brilliant pass went straight to Julie Hall.

It was to be Julie Hall’s turn to defy the Gloucester keeper and feed the ball through to Sarah Hall who made no mistake in firing home her second goal of the match.

Bret’s keeper Vicky Watkins was rarely troubled throughout this game, but when she was called into action she was as adept and awesome as usual.

Great defending by Sarah Cook and the evergreen returning veteran Jane Wheeler also kept the City girls quiet.

This weekend sees the serious matter of the ladies back in action in Premier League 2A. Their first home game of the season sees them up against Newent 1st XI – always a testing game – and this one is sure to be really exciting, so please come along and support the team.

The game starts at 10.30am at Evesham High School astro pitch.

Training takes place every Wednesday at Evesham High School between 7-8.30pm.
