Stour Excelsior fight back to seal impressive victory

WITH most of the Worcestershire-based teams taking part in the first rounds of the WFA Junior and Minor County Cups, Pinvin United were hoping to move to the top of the Birdseye Sports Evesham Sunday League Division One table but were stopped in their tracks by Stour Excelsior.

After Pinvin took an early 2-0 lead with a brace from Haines, the visiting Cotswolds outfit drew level before the break and then powered to a 4-2 as Johnson bagged a hat-trick and Tomes completed the scoring.

Tewkesbury Town looked strong in a 4-0 home victory over fellow newly-promoted side Mickleton Rangers as Matt Tarling bagged a brace and there were further goals from Bloom and Brady.

Division Two’s bottom club Charlton Old Boys were hoping to pick up their first win of the season but were undone by the odd goal in five by visitors Alderton.

Old Boys’ goals came from Knight and Andy Clements but Alderton secured a 3-2 success thanks to efforts from Baker, Reid and Greaves.

Meanwhile, Harvington proved too strong for visitors Sun Inn as Philpott scored twice and Woodfield and Wallace also netted in a 4-3 victory. Sun Inn struck through Parker, Davies and Price.

Stour Excelsior Reserves entertained Division Three high-flyers Broadway United Reserves but could not emulate their first team’s performance and were beaten 4-2 by the early leaders.

Dunsbee and Shurmer scored for the home side but Sallis (2), Cooper and Marshall secured maximum points for the visitors.

Ashton 88 and visitors Fortis shared the points in a 1-1 draw in which James and Meynell were on the mark for the home and away side respectively.

Newly-formed Bretforton Old Boys Reserves maintained their 100 per cent record with a narrow 2-1 victory at Stratford United as Jones and Colston netted for OBs and Rapson did likewise for the hosts.
