MORE than 1,000 children and young people from schools across Worcestershire enjoyed a sport-packed day at the annual Worcestershire Winter School Games.

The Games, which took place across a range of University of Worcester sites, are a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire children in Worcestershire schools to take part in competitive sport.

The Redditch team were overall victors on the day with 55 points as they enjoyed 30 event victories. Droitwich & Worcester City and North Worcestershire finished second and third respectively, also with 55 points, but behind Redditch by virtue of number of individual event wins.

The children, ranging in age from seven to 18, battled it out for the title of Worcestershire School Games champion in seven different sports – zone basketball, sportshall athletics, netball, Quicksticks hockey, new age kurling, futsal and pan-disability football.

The Games, organised by Sports Partnership Herefordshire & Worcestershire, were supported by young leaders from local schools, colleges and universities across Worcestershire aiming to develop leadership skills which included officiating and event organisation.

The School Games also have their own set of ‘Olympic values’ which everyone participating had to commit to uphold. These were passion, honesty, teamwork, respect, determination and self-belief.

The youngsters were treated to a special visit from Chloe Rogers, who was part of the Great Britain women’s hockey team which won bronze at the London 2012 Olympics.

The 30-year-old, who enjoyed an illustrious international hockey career which spanned more than nine years and played 162 times for Great Britain, said: “The School Games is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get involved in sport, whether it’s trying a new sport out for the first time or being competitive in a sport as well as offering an opportunity to make friends and to achieve something together as a group.

“I’ve seen some fantastic young people getting involved in the School Games and giving it all at the sport. It’s great to see the celebration from them when they have done something well, the smile on their faces when they won something just showed how much competing in competitions such as the School Games means to them.

“There have also been some great volunteers here and people who are much-needed in sport, whether it’s umpiring or organising the competitions. There were certainly a great group of people getting involved with the Worcestershire School Games.”

The sports were won as follows: Key Stage Two New Age Kurling – Rushwick Primary School (West Worcestershire); Key Stage Three New Age Kurling – Vale of Evesham School (South Worcestershire); Year Seven Netball – RGS Worcester (Droitwich & Worcester City); Inclusive Zone Basketball – Blessed Edward Oldcorne (Droitwich & Worcester City); Year 3/4 Quicksticks Hockey (Large Schools) – Powick Primary School (West Worcestershire); Year 3/4 Quicksticks Hockey (Small Schools) – The Knoll (Wyre Forest); Key Stage Four/Five Futsal – Hanley Castle High (West Worcestershire); Pan-disability Football – The Bewdley School (Wyre Forest); Year Five/Six Boys’ Sportshall Athletics – Birchensale Middle (Redditch); Year Five/Six Girls’ Sportshall Athletics – Birchensale Middle (Redditch); Year Seven Boys’ Sportshall Athletics – Westacre Middle (Droitwich & Worcester City); Year Seven Girls’ Sportshall Athletics – Birchensale Middle (Redditch); Year Eight Boys’ Sportshall Athletics – Birchensale Middle (Redditch); Year Eight Girls’ Sportshall Athletics – Woodrush High (Redditch).
