BRETFORTON Ladies secured their first victory of the season on Saturday to leapfrog their opponents and move off the bottom of the table.

The Stroud-based hosts put pressure on the visitors from the start and were unlucky not to score in the opening minutes of the game with a quick break.

Both teams found it hard to get into the game to begin with and rash tackles led to two Bretforton players being cautioned – and consequently sin-binned – in quick concession.

Wotton looked to take advantage of the visitors’ missing players and were unfortunate not to find the back of the net.

With a full team back on the pitch, the first goal for Bretforton came shortly afterwards when an accurate short corner drag out by Dani Cox and a fantastic strike from Tessa Lewinton from the edge of the D was one that the Wotton defence and keeper could only watch fly into the goal.

The hosts equalised shortly afterwards with a strike which was deflected in off Emma Lowe’s head.

With the score level, both teams battled to gain the ascendancy and it was Bretforton who struck before half time with another fabulous goal from Lewinton who, despite the tight angle, fired beyond the Wotton keeper’s reach.

The second half saw some good linking from the Wotton team, who were only denied an equaliser through some solid defending from Bretforton, in particular Jane Wheeler who again had a great game at left back.

The visitors managed to hold on to win through sheer want and determination – something that Lisa Workman in midfield was instrumental in maintaining – and Bretforton were unlucky not to increase their lead through some outstanding runs on the right from their young winger.

Bretforton will look to build on this success on Saturday when they host Gloucester 2nds on Saturday (10.30am) at The De Montfort School.
