Ladies touch team win sponsors and top spot at first Super Sunday

THERE was double delight for Pershore women’s touch rugby squad who sported cool new kit thanks to a local business and also scooped top spot at the first 16-team Midlands Ladies Touch League Super Sunday at the weekend.

Pershore-based Midshire Communications Ltd (MCL), which supplies an award-winning range of multifunctional print solutions and is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of Kyocera machines, has sponsored the ladies’ team’s new match kit, which they wore to good effect at Sunday’s all-day women’s touch event at Old Laurentians in Rugby.

Pershore won all of their pool matches and then took on the best teams from the other three tournament pools in a closely contested round-robin.

Pershore won 2-1 against Camp Hill, 2-1 against the NE region’s top team Stratford and then, although losing 1-0 to Wellesbourne and tying with them on points, they came top overall having scored the most tries in the play-offs.

Local women playing for Pershore on Sunday were Alice Keylock (coach), Emmie Bewley, Fizz Bewley (one try), Sharon Moore, Sian White (team player of the tournament), Emma Field (two tries), Sue Breay (two tries), Sarah Thomas, Kiele Doyle (one try), Teresa Crowley (three tries) and Verity Farr (four tries).

Fizz Bewley, chairwoman of Pershore RFC’s touch section, said MCL’s support could not have come at a better time for the ladies’ team.

“MCL have given our team a big boost just before the first of the three main Midlands Ladies Touch League all-team tournaments, which will decide an overall Midlands winner,” she said.

“We have been doing so well in all of our South West regional tournaments so far this season so having a professional, attractive set of lightweight match kit really has cemented the confidence and solidarity of our team leading into the Super Sunday. Thank you MCL!”

Geoff Mabbott, Managing Director of MCL, said: “Our company also sponsors Pershore Rugby Club’s senior men’s team, as well as the minis and juniors section too, so it was clear that we should extend that to the women’s touch team also as soon as they needed new match kit, especially since they are doing so well.”

Any female, aged 13 or over, can come and have a go at touch rugby, either by coming along to Pershore RFC, Mill Lane, Wyre Piddle on Wednesdays at 7.30pm, when the ladies train, or by telephoning Fizz on 01905 381080.

The club are running a special ‘have a go’ promotion, where the first three sessions are free and, thereafter, training costs £5 per month, so now is a good time to join in.
