Impressive scores in three-ball Stableford

A FIELD of 69 Vale Golf Club seniors played a three-ball Stableford on the International Course.

With the course running long and with a number of temporary greens in play because of green maintenance week, a number of excellent scores were recorded in all three divisions.

In Division One Mick Lewis topped the pile with 41 points, second was Brian Brumhead with 38, third was Gerry Clayton with 36 and fourth was Bob Sharp with 36.

David Waring won Division Two with 43 points ahead of second placed Mike Pickrell with 41. Tony Townsend was third with 39 and John Milward was fourth with 39.

Mike Spittle won Division Three with 45 points, second was Brian Leggott with 43, third was Andy Jinks with 41 and fourth was Brian Bunn with 40.

A few days beforehand the annual Veterans versus Seniors contest was held and an extremely good spirited but competitive series of matches resulted in bragging rights going to the veterans by five games to three.

Vale seniors were undone in the away return fixture in the annual Chip n Vale Cup against Chipping Norton GC.

Vale went into the second leg with a slender 4-3 advantage but the home side proved too strong for the Vale golfers who lost 5-2 to leave the trophy in the hands of the Cotswold club for the next year.

Vale got off to a superb start as the first pairing of Derek Lambert and Ray Jakeman came home 7&6 winners, but the only subsequent successes in a series of close games were halves for Roger Hawes and Larry Taylor and Jim Rushworth partnering Milward.
