Famous faces to star in Evesham charity football matches

THE GROWERS United FC team are again holding their annual charity football tournament at Evesham United’s Spiers & Hartwell Jubilee Stadium this year.

However, this year the format is larger and the event takes place over two weekends, starting with the game against a Liverpool All Stars team on Saturday, July 11 (3.30pm).

The Liverpool squad, many of whom are expected to be in attendance on the day, includes Alan Kennedy, Bob Bolder, Phil Neal, Phil Babb, John Wark, Don Hutchison, John Aldridge, Paul Walsh, David Thompson, Jason McAteer, Michael Thomas and Mark Wright.

Gates open at 1.30pm and admission is £6. Car parking is £3. Tickets are available now from Growers United, Evesham United and Birdseye Sports or you can pay on the day.

The following weekend (July 18/19) the Growers United Copa America tournament will be based over two days. This nine-a-side football event features teams from the local horticultural industry and from as far afield as Poole and East Anglia.

The weekend ends with another Growers United versus Soap Stars match and the soaps team will feature Danny Miller (Aaron Livesy, Emmerdale), Joe Gill (Finn Barton, Emmerdale), Daniel Jillings (Prey), Luke Roskell (Sean, Emmerdale), Anthony Quinian (Pete Barton, Emmerdale), Ayden Callaghan (Joe Roscoe, Hollyoaks), Greg Lake (Geordie Shore), Reece Douglas (Denzil Kelly, Waterloo Road), Tony Discipline (Tyler Moon, Eastenders), Nico Mirallegro (Barry Newton, Hollyoaks, The Ark) and Dean Smith (William Elliot, Last Tango in Halifax).

Admission is £2 and car parking is £3 per day. Kick-off for this game is at 4pm.

This is the third year the event has been run and to date it has raised £30,000 for charity, including Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Cancer Research.

NINE of last season’s Evesham United squad have signed on for the new Southern League Division One South & West campaign.

Jared Wilson, Liam Harding, Linden Dovey, Marcus Jackson, Lee Smith, Lance Smith, Ashley Edenborough, Lewis Binns and Kevin Sawyer have all signed for the 2015-16 season and Ashley Williams – a midfielder who played for Southern League Premier Division side Paulton Rovers last season – has also signed. He previously played for Chippenham Town and Mangotsfield United.

More players are expected to sign on at the Jubilee Stadium in the next couple of weeks.
