YOUNGSTERS across the Vale are being encouraged to join the fun and take part in the exciting sport of hockey.

St Egwin’s CE Middle School’s Karen Robinson, who is part of the England Masters hockey squad and plays for the renowned Stourport Hockey Club, said hockey was loved by the vast majority of youngsters who sampled the sport in the Evesham area but fears lack of opportunities to play could see interest in the sport dwindle to a worrying low.

St Egwin’s offers a wide variety of hockey after school and lunchtime clubs across the whole winter season and throughout parts of the summer.

Therefore, Karen is keen to encourage other youngsters from across the area to take up hockey and says Evesham and Badsey Hockey Club is just one club which is keen to attract new faces.

“I am part of the England Masters hockey squad and coach the kids here at St Egwin’s and the enthusiasm for hockey is amazing,” she said.

“They love it and enjoy having fixtures against other schools and competing for our school. We travel to Birmingham and Worcester to get fixtures for the boys, who now look very smart with our new shirts.

“Our year seven boys’ team have got themselves into the Regional Finals in Cannock this week to compete against other regions, which is a huge acheivement for them and us as a school.”

Karen is thankful to the local businesses which have shown their support for the game with generous backing and says this has acted as an inspiration to the youngsters.

“Listers Volkswagen Evesham have been very supportive to us and as a school we would like to thank them very much for their help in getting us some amazing new shirts,” added Karen.

“We look very professional when we travel around Worcestershire playing other schools.

“Birdseye Sports in Evesham High Street ordered and created the shirts and Listers sponsored them.”

She added: “I have links with Evesham and Badsey Hockey Club and try to encourage many of our pupils to join and carry on their enjoyment within a club.

“We have some very talented and skilful hockey players in this school and the encouragement and support we have for this sport and our school is amazing.”
