PERSHORE Tennis Centre duo Antony Fordham and Matthew Sime were crowned 14 and under doubles county champions at the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Lawn Tennis Association annual county closed tournament at Manor Park in Malvern.

This was the last tournament of the season for Fordham and his last in the 14 and under age group.

Hoping to finish the season in winning fashion, he had entered the singles in the 14 and under and 16 and under age groups and doubles in the 14 and under age group.

Comfortably reaching the quarter-finals in the 14 and under singles, fifth seed Fordham faced number one seed Luke Pycock for a place in the semis but it was not to be and Fordham lost out to the eventual winner 6-2 6-2.

Next came the 16 and under singles in which the unseeded Fordham again progressed to the quarter-finals and once again met the number one seed – this time Alex Maggs of Redditch HDA who is ranked 12th in the country – and once again Fordham lost to the eventual winner.

This left Fordham with the 14 and under doubles as his only hope of ending the season with a tournament win.

Unseeded Pershore TC duo Fordham and Sime met club-mate Sam Rayner and his partner in the quarter-finals and won a fast-paced match 6-1 6-2 to progress to the semis in which the number two seeds awaited.

This was a tight match won 6-4, 6-3 by Fordham and Sime as they produced some wonderful net play and strong serving.

The final was against the top seeded pair Pycock and Max Hingley and proved to be a worthy occasion.

Fordham and Sime played with confidence and took the first set 6-2, but the second set was a more even affair as the top seeds fought back, however Fordham and Sime proved to be too strong and took the set 7-5.

This was a fitting way for Fordham to end his time at 14 and under level.
