Boxers end the year in fine style

STRATFORD & District Boxing Academy fighters – including rising Evesham star Jordan Lee – have ended the year in superb fashion.

They recently held their first show of the season at Stratford School, which helped build further on the community links the club is so passionate about.

The show had a 5.30pm start and a recurring comment about the event was the friendly family atmosphere enjoyed by the large crowd.

The academy was overjoyed to welcome professional boxer Frankie Gavin to the show as special guest. The Birmingham star – a former British and two-time Commonwealth welterweight champion – also brought his belt collection with him, which served as a huge motivation for the boxers.

The show featured 13 bouts on the day, which included eight of the academy’s own boxers – Ashley Beard, Davey Boswell, Robbie Warner, Alan Duggan, Jason Johnson, Will Foley, Jamie Jenkins and Jake Lee.

The standard of boxing for the entire show was very high.

Foley was named Stratford Boxer of the Show, which was thoroughly deserved, after a points victory over a tough boxer from Walsall Wood.

This was the first time Foley had fought three, three-minute rounds and his head coach Mat Pickering said: “Will put in a great performance, working behind the jab, and both boxers put in a great display of boxing.”

A few days after the show Foley got straight back into the ring against a Lions Boxer and former national champion and built on his performance at the academy show.

Pickering added: “This was another display of clinical boxing from Will to get a well deserved unanimous points victory.”

The club’s year ended with Evesham’s Jordan Lee taking on an Atherstone boxer and Pickering was delighted with what he witnessed.

“It was another good display of boxing, at times a scrappy affair, but Jordan outboxed his opponent for a well deserved points victory.”

The club is looking forward to kicking off 2016 with the Youth Championships in which both Foley and Miriam Zouhou will be starting their campaign.

The club is also delighted to announce Pickering has been nominated for the Pride of Stratford Awards, as well as Coach of the Year and Volunteer of the Year in the Stratford Sports Awards, and everyone from the club wishes him the best of luck.
