Shocking statistics reveal half of drivers pulled over were on drugs

SHOCKING statistics released by West Mercia Police show out of 671 people swabbed for drug-driving in the last 11 months, with more than half of those stopped being arrested.

The figures illustrate that from March last year to January 2016 – the latest statistics available – 353 drivers were found to have drugs in their system.

Of those stopped, 302 tested positive for cannabis and 80 for cocaine (some would have had both drugs in their systems).

The tests see mouth swabs taken at the roadside and then the drug-testing device signals which substances, if any, the drivers have taken.

A spokesperson from West Mercia Police said drug-driving could have life-changing consequences – to both those under the influence and other road users.

“The drug testing kit and the leglislation change in March 2015 have provided our Operational Policing Units, who have the primary responsibility to enforce road safety, with the tools to ensure that those who drive under the influence of drugs can be caught and prosecuted.

“Drugs in your system can seriously impair your ability to drive safely, putting both yourself and other road users at risk.

“We would urge everyone to remember these risks, and never get behind the wheel of a vehicle when under the inluence of drugs or alcohol.”
