Safety fears at A46 junction prompts call for change from campaigners

CAMPAIGNERS have launched a petition calling on highways chiefs to build a roundabout at an ‘extremely dangerous’ junction on the A46 in Evesham.

Frustrated Sedgeberrow residents launched an online petition last Thursday (September 22) urging Highways England to convert the B4078 junction into a roundabout.

Now with nearly 200 signatures, villagers and Vale residents raised safety concerns about the junction, labelled as a ‘major disaster waiting to happen,’ after numerous near-misses as a result of the build-up of traffic on the A46.

Speaking to the Observer, a spokesman for the campaign said: “This is an extremely dangerous junction at the end of a very fast road and there is no alternative to using it when trying to get to Evesham or its bypass.

“With mothers and fathers taking their children to school having to use it twice a day it is a disaster waiting to happen.

“On health and safety grounds alone this roundabout should be at the top of Highways England’s’ list of to do’s.

“Judging by the reactions I have received most people are terrified of using the junction.”

Sedgeberrow Parish Council has also got involved and has written to the Highways Agency who responded by saying the issue would be added to their 2016/17 study list to look at the junction in more detail.

However, a spokesperson from Highways England said they will continue to monitor the safety of the junction, but pointed to the improvement work they carried on the junction only two years ago.

“We carried out work to improve safety along this section of the A46 two years ago, including providing better road markings and installing new central islands with bollards,” a spokesperson said.

“We will continue to monitor safety along the route and take action when appropriate. We’d also encourage motorists to stick to the speed limit for their own and other people’s safety.”
