PERSHORE residents can enjoy horses and courses at the annual Plum Festival family race night.

The British plum season officially begins on Tuesday (July 28) and to celebrate The Angel Hotel in Pershore is sponsoring a plum-filled race night at Worcester Racecourse to carry on the tradition of the historic Pershore races.

The evening will include the iconic Land O’Plums chase, a race steeped in Victorian and Edwardian history, first run in 1899.

The race night not only marks the start of the month long Pershore Plum Festival, but is also an 80 year anniversary tribute to the Pershore Race Course, which was moved to its new home in 1935 to avoid flooding, but never re-opened after being used as an army camp in the Second World War.

In addition to the Land O’ Plums Chase, the Plum Festival will feature other races resurrected for the occasion, including the Tiddesley Wood Yellow Egg Plum Handicap and the Pensham Hurdle.

Chair of the Plum Festival, Angela Tidmarsh said: “Marking the beginning of the award winning Pershore Plum Festival, racegoers are encouraged to wear purple to join in with the spirit of the festival.

“What also makes it a unique event is appearances by special guests including the Plum Charmer, Prunella Plum and the Plum Princess.”

Gates open at 3.35pm with the first race being run at 5.35pm, through to the last race at 8.40pm.
