Joy's gearing up for Aussie drive

A TRAVELLING fanatic is gearing up for her next challenge to raise funds for a Vale charity.

Joy Rainey, from Evesham, undertook an epic 31-day drive which saw her cross from the West coast of America to the East coast, in her 1904 Curved Dash Oldsmobile last year, and is already planning her next trip in the 110-year-old car.

Australian-born Joy became the first woman to have driven the journey in a single cylinder car and subsequently published a book about her adventure when she returned to the Vale last summer.

Not intending to rest on her laurels, Joy and her trusty motor will set off again this summer, this time tackling central Australia.

The event will raise funds for Evesham Riverside Shopmobility and will leave Adelaide on August 3 before finishing in Darwin 21 days later. She will be joined by 48 other veteran cars.

Joy herself is of restricted growth and has been a regular user of the charity’s equipment for many years, leading to her becoming a trustee.

“I wanted my journey this year to help a charity again and what better one could there be than this, which is right on my

doorstep and has given me invaluable assistance?” she said.
