Fast food chains, wine bar and coffee shop lined up for £1.7million Vauxhall Inn revamp

A £1.7MILLION redevelopment of the derelict Vauxhall Inn has finally begun with fast food restaurants, a wine bar and coffee shop all lined up, the Observer can reveal.

Builders moved on site back in May, three years after planning permission was granted by Wychavon District Council for the redevelopment of the former pub.

Vauxhall Inn owner Terry McKeritt stepped in to carry out the work after MJ International Management Ltd, who made the initial planning application, was dissolved.

The derelict building will become a food hall featuring a Burger King, a Kentucky fried chicken chain, a pizza parlour, a small noodle bar, an upmarket fish and chip shop, a well-known coffee chain and a wine bar. Not all of the brands can be named yet as some contracts are yet to be finalised.

The development will also provide 32 car parking spaces, including two disabled bays and it is hoped 30 jobs will be created once the outlets are up and running.

Although work has started, it is not yet known when the re-developed site will be officially opened.

The first step of the work will see the roof taken off and replaced, with the main shell of the building remaining the same.

A small single story extension will be added and the first floor of the building, which has been vacant for a number of years, will also be converted into two flats.

Concerns were raised about the re-development with the Vale of Evesham Civic Society objecting to the scheme because they claimed it was unsuitable due to how close it was to the town’s historic offering.

“In our view the creation of takeaways with associated traffic, parking and litter issues is totally inappropriate in the historic centre of Evesham so close to the churches, the Bell Tower and the Grade I listed Almonry museum and must be rejected,” they said.

The developers hit back, saying the new development would help enhance the town centre.

“The redevelopment and substantial external improvements proposed will greatly enhance this important area of Evesham Town Centre and may help encourage further independent and individual retail investment within this attractive market town.

“The visual enhancement of the town centre combined with appropriate retail investment will encourage visitors and local residents to make use of the town centre facilities rather than the numerous edge-of-town and out-of-town facilities,” they added.
