A DEDICATED Evesham volunteer scooped two accolades at the first ever West Mercia Awards.

Sharon Summers picked up the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award and the ‘Excellence in Policing’ award at the prestigious ceremony on Thursday (October 22) at Hindlip Hall.

Ms Summers was presented with the awards by Dep Lt Christopher James and Chief Con David Shaw, for going beyond the call of duty to ensure the town’s community stays safe through her ongoing commitment to the Evesham Safer Neighbourhood Team.

The awards aim to recognise the outstanding role county workforce and communities conduct daily in helping protect people from harm in the West Mercia policing area.

“I feel very honoured my inspector and sergeant nominated me,” said Ms Summers.

“To be named volunteer of the year as well as receiving the excellence in policing award is fantastic.

“When I started working for West Mercia it was the first volunteer scheme in the country and we really didn’t know whether it would even work or last.

“But here we are 18 years later. I’m really pleased to be a part of the awards event,” she added.

Richard Elkin, director of enabling services said: “Sharon has completed more than 18 years of doing an excellent job volunteering with the police, and she has made a long standing commitment to the Evesham Safer Neighbourhood Team.”
