Chairman starts her year with a ‘great night’

A RESPECTED Evesham councillor has attended her first function as chairman of Wychavon District Council after describing her ‘great honour’ at taking the chains of office.

Coun Frances Smith attended Evesham Operatic and Dramatic Society’s (EODS’s) production of ‘A Night At The Movies’ at Evesham’s Arts Centre last Thursday (May 19).

The function was her first as the council’s figurehead following a vote at Wychavon’s annual council meeting last Wednesday.

“The show was slick and professional and it was great to see local talent at its best, both on the stage and behind the scenes,” she said.

“It’s always a pleasure to join the audiences and see amateur theatre and its enthusiastic volunteers at first hand.

“Evesham is so lucky to have such a valuable asset as the Arts Centre and an abundance of local talent. Well done EODS on another great evening,” she added.

Coun Smith took over the role from former chairman Coun Val Wood who was the first Pershore councillor in the council’s history to ever hold the position.

Coun Smith, who also represents Little Hampton, said: “Being elected Chairman of Wychavon District Council is something special and a great honour for two reasons.

“When I worked here I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would wear this chain, and secondly I believe John and I are the first husband and wife team to hold this office, John having being Chairman in 2002/2003.

“My theme for my year is ‘working within the community’, and I am more than happy to promote any section of our community – be it the businesses, voluntary groups, the young and the elderly – who do so much to make Wychavon a district to be proud of.”

Coun Smith has also chosen St Richard’s Hospice as her charity during her year in office.

Speaking after departing the role, Coun Wood said: “It also opened my eyes to the community spirit that is alive and well making this district one of the most sought after places to live.

“I am sure that the new chairman will have an interesting and enjoyable year and I thank her for her support as my Vice Chairman.”

During her time as Chairman, Coun Wood has raised more than £2,000 for her two chosen charities; Worcestershire Wildlife Trust and Dementia Care.

EODS’s next production will be the musical Chess which will run from November 15 to 19.
