BT must invest much more in broadband - Evesham's MP

EVESHAM’S MP Nigel Huddleston has hit out at BT for letting down communities by significantly under investing in broadband infrastructure.

The Mid-Worcestershire MP sits on the influential Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee which published a damning report on BT’s Openreach subsidiary that provides most of the UK’s underlying broadband infrastructure.

MPs on the committee are demanding BT invests significantly more in Openreach- and to give the broadband arm of the company more autonomy over its investments.

The damning report also went as far saying that if BT does not ‘offer the reforms and investment assurances necessary to satisfy our concerns’ then Ofcom should step in to force the full separation of Openreach from BT.

Speaking following the publication of the report, Mr Huddleston said: “BT has allowed service quality levels to remain low at Openreach in recent years and there has been a shortfall in investment of potentially hundreds of millions of pounds a year.

“There is also a lack of transparency and accountability throughout the company.

“Nowhere more are BT’s service failures evident than in Mid-Worcestershire.

“As I’ve said many times, broadband is still the number one issue I am contacted about by constituents.

“BT is letting down our communities and local businesses. I really do hope this report offers them the clarity they need to put their house in order.”
